The DiscoQueer story

DiscoQueer is a club party dedicated to disco music of 1975-83 years. The story began in late 2005 when I noticed there wasnt any 70’s Disco GL friendly gig. Such a shame, when you consider you’re at Paris, the city of Le Palace famous club, the home of French Touch ambassadors who used and re-used disco samples for 95-99 house hits and above all, the gay scene is totally amnesic, forgetting that their modern root are in 70s Disco culture.

It was first a Tea-dance (the first edition was the Sunday 19th March 2006), when Nouveau Casino accepted to turn it at a Saturday night gig. Since we succeeded to gather more than 600 dancers, DiscoQueer found its residency in the famous intimate club of rue Oberkampf district. DiscoQueer happens now around 7 times. Who is Aïcha ?

Dj, promoter, graphic designer, disco lover ! Aïcha is THE Soul of DiscoQueer. Nothing could happen without her. With Passion she dared to create a completely new event around Disco music. Born in Paris in 1975, She studied arts and sociology sciences, before working in Internet.

She launched in 2004 “Discolounge” parties to show about that sound of disco you never hear : underground disco, from Philadelphia to European great producers you would never dance on in mainstream-disco selection that dominate all classical disco parties and radio shows.

Hard work, passion, braveness, creativity, she’s still there with many side Djs, venues, towns, and more to come.

What kind of musics can we hear at DiscoQueer ?
Disco… A big wor(l)d ! I decided to close the years between 1975 and 1983. 1975 is the official starting of first Disco label Salsoul, and lots of Disco hits. Of course, collectors and freaks will tell you “Bullshit!”, because Disco beat and orchestral arrangments are present since 1972-73 with Philadelphia Sound, a music conducted by big acts as Vince Montana, many kinds of disco Trammps, Bunny Sigler, remixer Tom Moulton etc.. In fact, I dont play so much 75-76 elements except in warm-ups or in bars. It’s too “souley”, with all the respects I have for this style. You won’t hear any music over 1983 to be franc (except some brilliant powerfull hi-nrg tunes like “male stripper”, or fantastic happy Italo).

DiscoQueer clubbing Disco needs more Pumpin’ and Glamour ! You’ll hear there, plenty of gems from US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy etc.. Suggestive chorists get mixed with analogic keyboards trance, 125-135 bpm overdrive beat, african or latin percussion breaks… Drama, mystery, outer space, jungle, stars, glamour, and at the end of the night (about 5 AM), masterpieces in 7″, Camp and not serious Disco, unknown French. And Improvization during the whole night ! Some Hi-Nrg, Italo, Disco-Rock can be heard, my guests and I are not closed to related disco styles.

Alec. R. Costandinos, Cerrone, Amanda Lear, Patrick Cowley, Barclay, Philips, Ibis, Malligator, Salsoul, Ibach, Fantasy, Boris Midney, Antony Monn, Hansa, Jo Bisso, of course Moroder, … names, names, names !
